Meet Philip Muzzy
Candidate for Hays County District Clerk
Philip, most often called by his last name “Muzzy”, has resided in Hays County for 28 years.
”I have over 30 years of leadership experience in both the public and private sectors".
Work ethic and values
I joined the U.S. Army Military Police Corps at the age of 18 and completed a 5-year enlistment obtaining the rank of Sergeant. At Fort Bragg, I served on the Special Reactions Team (SRT) and maintained Jump Status as a Paratrooper. My deployments include Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti 1994), and serving with the United Nations Mission In Haiti (1995). This early-life experience instilled the morals, values and work ethic that have made me the man I am today.
Administrative Leadership Experience
At the age of 25, I was the Director of Operations for a national restaurant franchise and was responsible for opening new store locations across the country, as well as training franchisees and their employees. I did this while owning my own restaurant and attending classes at Texas State University. It took a few years, but I earned my first degree; a bachelor’s in applied Sociology.
Organizational Leadership Experience
After years of designing, operating, and scaling several businesses, I left the private sector to answer the calling of becoming a teacher, lead teacher, and head coach. This was a blessed time in my life where I was able to impact young lives, mentor students, and learn how to grow my leadership skills with true professionals. It was a fast-paced, team driven environment; that taught me how to both listen and lead at the same time. For a period of time, I taught students at a residential treatment facility (RF) and never forgot what I perceived as a lack of education for this highly mobile, and at-risk population of students.
Budgeting, Policy, and Grant funding experience
In 2015, after a year of relentless research, writing and planning, I submitted a Charter School application to the State of Texas to serve those same students. I was awarded the School District by both the State Board of Education, and Commissioner of Education. To finance the School District, I wrote and submitted an $800,000 grant, and it was approved. The school district still serves those students today, and has expanded over the years to other residential facilities. I am grateful to the leaders and employees that continue the vision and mission.
Educational Leadership Experience
I went back to college at the age of 42, and completed a master’s degree in educational leadership and management to become an Associate Principal for the School District. My leadership role at the School District was a profound experience, and I will forever be grateful.
Business Experience
I have owned and operated several successful businesses in both Pennsylvania and Texas. Currently, I am a proud business owner in San Marcos.
Philip is married to Sylvia Deleon-Muzzy, a life-long San Marcos resident and graduate of both San Marcos High-School, and Texas State University. Sylvia is a Licensed Realtor at Muzzy Property Group. They live in San Marcos and have 3 daughters, Jessie, Annie and Zoe. Jessie attends Texas State University, Annie attends Texas A&M University – Kingsville College of Engineering, and Zoe is a 4th grade student at Rodriguez Elementary in San Marcos.
On November 5th, vote Philip Muzzy for Hays County District Clerk.
